Caption: Roman ruins, Israel. Row of granite columns in the harbour of Caesarea on the coast of Israel. They date to the 1st century BC, when Caesarea was founded by Herod, King and governor of the Roman province of Judea (later Palestine). Herod named the city after his patron, Caesar Augustus, and made it the capital of Judea. A large harbour was built at Caesarea, though it was devastated by an earthquake in 130 AD. Excavation began in 1873. More than 1300 column fragments have been found on the seabed in the harbour.
