Caption: Orchid flowers (Orchis provincialis). One of the petals (pink spots on yellow and white) of each flower is called the lip. It is a specialised structure that attracts pollinators (one seen in the flower at left). This orchid is found in southern Europe. It is a terrestrial orchid (one that grows in the ground). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
