Caption: Orchid flowers (Orchis punctulata). Each of the flowers has an elongated petal (here, yellow with red spots and a forked shape). This is the lip, a specialised structure that attracts pollinators to the flower. The rest of the flower forms a helmet shape. This orchid is found from Greece to the eastern Mediterranean. It is a terrestrial orchid (one that grows in the ground). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
