Caption: Orchid flowers (Phalaenopsis mannii). Each flower has a wing-shaped white petal. This is the lip, a specialised petal that attracts pollinators and provides them with a landing platform. This orchid is found in the tropical forests of the Himalayas and South-East Asia. This specimen is from Burma. It is an epiphytic orchid (one that grows in trees). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
