Caption: Orchid flowers (Phalaenopsis sumatrana). Each of the flowers has a protruding petal (pink and white with white hairs). This is the lip, a specialised petal that attracts pollinators and provides them with a landing platform to access the flower's central reproductive parts. This orchid is found in the islands of Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia, including Sumatra. It is an epiphytic orchid (one that grows in trees). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
