Caption: Orchid flowers (Phalaenopsis violacea). The lower, protruding, petal of each flower is completely purple. It is a specialised petal, called the lip, that attracts pollinators and provides them with a landing platform. This orchid is found in Sumatra and northwards to the Malay peninsula. It is an epiphytic orchid (one that grows in trees). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
