Caption: Orchid flower (Pleione bulbocodioides). The lower petal (frilled, red spots) is called the lip. It is a specialised structure that helps attract pollinators. The tube-like shape guides them to the reproductive parts of the flower. This orchid is found in cold and cool regions of China, Nepal and Tibet. It is a terrestrial orchid (one that grows in the ground). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
