Caption: Orchid flowers (Pleione yunnanensis). The lower petal of each flower (frilled, pink spots) is called the lip. It is a specialised structure that helps attract pollinators. The tube-like shape guides them to the reproductive parts of the flower. This orchid is found in cold and cool areas of south-western China. It is a terrestrial orchid (one that grows in the ground). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
