Caption: Orchid flowers (Polystachya lawrenceanum), seen from the side. Each flower has a petal called a lip (pink). This is a specialised structure that attracts pollinators to the flower and provides a place for them to land. The Polystacha orchids are mostly found growing in trees in tropical Africa. There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
