Caption: Orchid flower (Renanthera matutina). The lateral (side) sepals have fused to form the lower part of the flower. This helps to attract pollinators to the central reproductive parts. Several unopened flowers are also seen. This orchid is found in South-East Asia, Sumatra and Java. This specimen is from Java. It is an epiphytic orchid (one that grows in trees). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
