Caption: Orchid flower (Serapias neglecta). The elongated petal hanging downwards is the lip, a specialised petal that attracts pollinators to the flower. The ring of hairs (upper left) lines the route leading towards the flower's reproductive parts. This orchid grows in wet grasslands in France and Italy and some of the nearby Mediterranean islands. It is a terrestrial orchid (one that grows in the ground). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
