Caption: Orchid flowers (Serapias parviflora). One of the flowers is displaying an elongated petal (red, upper right) hanging downwards. This is the lip, a specialised petal that attracts pollinators to the flower. The hairs (upper right) line the route leading towards the flower's reproductive parts. This orchid grows throughout the temperate Mediterranean region. It is a terrestrial orchid (one that grows in the ground). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
