Caption: Orchid flower (Stanhopea 'Assidensis'). This is a hybrid orchid, possibly naturally occurring. It is a cross between S. wardii and S. tigrina. Part of another flower is seen at upper right. The flower of this plant has a complex anatomy, and is here seen from the side. The protruding structures (at centre right) attract pollinators to the reproductive parts. The Stanhopea orchids are from the tropical parts of the Americas. There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
