Caption: Heavy lifting. Man attempting to lift a heavy box by bending his body over and down to lift the box. This is an incorrect method for lifting heavy objects. Incorrect lifting is a common cause of injury to the lower back. Pain to the back (lumbago) is caused when soft tissues (muscles, tendons and ligaments) around the bones of the spine are damaged. Severe strain can also result in a slipped disc (disc prolapse). This is where a disc of soft tissue between the spinal vertebrae is dislocated, putting pressure on the spinal nerve. Treatment includes rest and painkilling drugs. In severe cases, slipped discs may require surgery. To see the correct method for lifting heavy items objects please see image number M382/682.
