Caption: False-colour Magnetic Resonance Image (MRI) of an axial section through a human head, showing the division of the bulk of the brain into left & right cerebral hemispheres. This scan was made at eye-level - vitreous humour inside each eye appears in green. The layer of fat under the skin of the scalp appears in various colours around the edge of the image. Bone of the skull and the cerebro-spinal fluid which bathes the brain appear black. MRI is also called NMR - nuclear magnetic resonance - the name of the physical principal upon which the imaging technique is based.
