Caption: Shuttle Atlantis about to clear the tower moments after launch on Mission STS-34 on 18 October 1989 from the Kennedy Space Centre, Florida. Atlantis carried the Galileo Jupiter Exploration Probe into space, sending it on its six-year long journey to intercept the planet. As it approaches Jupiter, Galileo will release a probe which will parachute into the Jovian atmosphere, sending back new data about the composition and dynamics of Jupiter's weather patterns. Mission STS-34 ended on 23 October 1989 with a safe landing at Edwards Air Force Base, California.
