Caption: Monkey orchid (Orchis simia). The flowerhead of the monkey orchid is composed of individual flowers (florets). Each one has an elongated petal called a lip, a specialised structure that attracts pollinators to the flower. The name of the orchid is due to the monkey-shape of the lip. This orchid is found in Europe but it is very rare. It is a terrestrial orchid (one that grows in the ground). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
