Caption: Bromeliad. A flowering bromeliad plant (family Bromeliaceae) in Ucumari Reserve, Colombia. The bromeliad family (also called the pineapple family) is almost completely confined to tropical America, where there are around 1400 species. Most are short-stemmed plants with rosettes of thick spiny leaves and bisexual flowers on a terminal inflorescence. In some species the leaf bases trap a pool of water, providing a home for lizards and frogs and a source of nutrients for the plant. Many species grow on trees for support, obtaining all their water and nutrients from rain and decaying plant and animal remains.
