Caption: Cabbage groundsels (Senecio brassica, lower frame, green). This plant is a high altitude, alpine member of the Compositae family that includes daisies. The rosette form of thick leaves arranged around a central bud is an adaptation to the low temperatures. At night the leaves close up to provide protection against the cold. Hairs on the underside of these plants trap air for insulation. The plant produces a single flower stem (brown, upper right) before it dies. Photographed around the Hall Tarns (mountain lakes) at an elevation of 4297 metres on Mount Kenya, Kenya.
