Caption: Eupatorium japonicum flower. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a Eupatorium japonicum flower. Each apparent flower head is actually a composite of many smaller flowers, a characteristic of the Compositae family to which this plant belongs. The two styles (female reprod- uctive structures, yellow) of each true flower are seen here. During fertilization, pollen carrying male genetic material is transferred down the styles to the ovaries, which contain female sex cells (ovules). Fertilization of the ovules results in the production of fruit containing seeds. This plant is native to China and Japan. Magnification: x55 at 6x7cm size.
