Caption: Cosmic rays research. Close-up of the detectors of the EAS-TOP (Extensive Air Showers) experiment which is found on the Gran Sasso D'Italia, Italy, at 2017m. The apparatus seen here is used to detect the high-energy particles such as protons, pions and neutrons present in the cosmic rays. Cosmic rays continuously hit the Earth and as they interact with the atoms in the upper atmosphere create secondary showers of lower energy particles such as muons, electrons and neutrinos. EAS-TOP will also be able to "see" these secondary showers and will work in conjunction with the Gran Sasso Laboratory situated underneath the mountain.
