Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Heavy lifting. Man attempting to lift a heavy box by lowering his body down to lift the box. This is the correct way of lifting heavy items. Incorrect lifting of heavy objects is a common cause of injury to the lower back. Pain to the back (lumbago) is caused when soft tissues (muscles, tendons and ligaments) around the bones of the spine are damaged. Severe strain can also result in a slipped disc (disc prolapse). This is where a disc of soft tissue between the spinal vertebrae is dislocated, putting pressure on the spinal nerve. Treatment includes rest and painkilling drugs. In severe cases, slipped discs may require surgery. To see the incorrect way of lifting heavy items see image number M382/681.
