Caption: to 31st May 2007 Genetic code. Computer artwork of a chromosome (orange) with DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) double helix molecules and letters representing the genetic code. The chromosome is composed of packaged DNA helices, which contain the information which controls and transmits an organism's hereditary traits. The helices are composed of twisting strands (pale white) of sugar-phosphate molecules, linked by complementary pairs of nucleotide bases (coloured spheres). There are four types of base; adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C) and thymine (T). The sequence of base pairs, arranged in discrete segments known as genes, determines the genetic code.
