There are four types of nucleotide base in a DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) molecule; adenine (A), thymine (T), cytosine (C) and guanine (G). These form complementary pairs which link the two sugar-phosphate strands of the DNA together, forming a double helix. The ordered sequence of A, T, C and G, arranged in discrete segments known as genes, determines the genetic code. The code contains the instructions which control and transmit an organism's hereditary traits.
