The letters represent the four types of nucleotide base in a DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) molecule; adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C) and thymine (T). These form complementary pairs which link the two sugar-phosphate strands of the DNA molecule together, forming a double helix. The ordered sequence of the pairs, arranged in discrete segments known as genes, determines the genetic code. This code, unique for every individual, controls the growth and functioning of every living organism.
