The helices are formed by two twisting sugar-phosphate strands (blue) and their nucleotide bases (spheres). Bonds (rods) join the bases in complementary pairs and link the helices to form the double helix. The order of the four types of nucleotide base along a strand is a genetic code that is unique for every individual. This biochemical DNA coding controls the functioning of every living organism. Binary code, used in computing, encodes information and instructions using on and off states (0 and 1).
