Caption: Bacterial DNA. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a plasmid of DNA. A plasmid is a length of DNA that can exist apart from the chromosome, and that can replicate on its own. Occurring both in bacteria and in yeast, these symbiotic pieces of DNA can be transferred from cell to cell and often act as vehicles for antibiotic resistance. In genetic engineering, plasmids are used to carry foreign DNA into a bacteria where they express the genetic information carried by the transplanted DNA. Magnification unknown.
