Caption: Bacteriophage DNA. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid, yellow) of a lambda bacteriophage, a virus that infects Escherichia coli bacteria. This bacteriophage possesses mostly double-stranded DNA, which it injects into a host cell. The DNA then either instructs the host to produce many copies of the bacteriophage (which later burst out of the host cell), or it incorporates itself into the genetic material of the host. Magnification: x57,000 when printed 10cm high.
