DNA is a helical molecule (here spiralling across the image) made up of two interlocking sugar-phosphate strands bound together by their nucleotide bases. Two 'twists' of the helix are seen here. This is B-DNA, the normal structural form of DNA. This model shows 602 atoms forming a dodecamer of 12 bases: CGCGAATTCGCG. The letters stand for the four nucleotide bases found in DNA: adenine (A), thymine (T), guanine (G) and cytosine (C). The atoms (tubes) are: carbon (green), oxygen (red), phosphorus (pink), and nitrogen (blue). Hydrogen atoms are not shown.
