Caption: DNA, computer model. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is the molecule that controls the growth and development of all living things. It encodes information in the form of genes, specific lengths of DNA that are used as templates for proteins. DNA comprises two strands (one gold, one purple here) formed of a sugar-phosphate backbone with nucleotide bases projecting inwards. Interactions between complementary pairs of bases hold the strands together. There are four types of base in DNA; cytosine, guanine, adenine and thymine. The sequence of the bases along the strands is what stores the information.
