Caption: DNA. Molecular model of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), composed of two strands twisted into a double helix. Each strand consists of an outer sugar-phosphate backbone (containing yellow spheres) with nucleotide bases attached (containing blue spheres). There are four different bases: guanine, cytosine, thymine and adenine. DNA contains sections, called genes, which encode each cell's structure, function and behaviour. Atoms are represented as spheres and are colour coded: carbon and hydrogen (grey), oxygen (red), phosphorous (yellow) and nitrogen (blue).
