Caption: DNA recognition. Computer model showing MyoD transcription factor, from a mouse (mus musculus), bound to DNA. Transcription factors are proteins that bind to specific sequences of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and control the transcription (transfer) of genetic information from DNA to RNA (ribonucleic acid). Transcription is the first step in the expression of genes but the correct DNA sequence must first be recognised. Here the two domains of MyoD (left:purple and brown, right:pale green and grey) are bound to either end of the DNA sequence (helix running diagonally from middle left to bottom right).
