Caption: Recombinant viruses. Test-tube containing purified adenoviruses used in genetic engineering. The opaque bands are the concentrated viruses after centrifugation. They have formed purified bands in a solution gradient of cesium chloride. These recombinant adenoviruses carry human genes, and by infecting cells with these viruses, the genes are transplated into cell DNA. Researchers may use gene implantation by a virus to experimentally implant genes causing human genetic diseases such as muscular dystrophy, haemophilia or cancer. In this way, human hereditary diseases can be studied. Photographed at the Genetic Laboratories of the CNRS-IGR Villejuif in Paris, France.
