Caption: Cystic fibrosis gene therapy research. Protein electrophoresis gel showing the production of a human protein from a genetically engineered (or recombinant) virus. Dark bands indicate individual protein particles that have been separated by electrophoresis. Red highlights bands of the human protein, CFTR. The viruses used here contain a piece of human DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) that produces the protein CFTR. Patients with the inherited disease, cystic fibrosis, have a mutation in their CFTR-producing gene. Researchers hope to use recombinant viruses in gene therapy. Cystic fibrosis sufferers could produce normal CFTR protein using drugs made from these viruses.
