Caption: DNA & anticancer protein p53. Computer representa- tion of the molecule Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) and the protein p53. p53 is a key regulator of cell division, depicted as a blue ribbon in the background. DNA is a helical molecule with a sugar-phosphate backbone (silver) and nucleotide bases (gold). The sequence of bases determines the genetic code. Here, the p53 protein has been expressed from the p53 gene on the DNA. This gene is activated in response to radiation and carcino- genic chemicals. The p53 protein stops cells from dividing in order that any chromosome damage can cells may divide without stopping, to form cancer.
