Caption: Damaged DNA. Computer artwork of a molecule of Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) from a skin cell which has been damaged by the ultraviolet (UV) rays in sunlight. DNA has 2 sugar-phosphate strands that wind around each other as a double helix. They are connected by four types of nucleotides (bases), represented here by spheres, these being: adenine (A), guanine (G), thymine (T), and cytosine (C). Here, UV has damaged some bases (bright yellow) so that their bond with the opposite base has broken. Incorrect repair of the DNA by the body may lead to cancers and other abnormalities. This image was produced during research into artificial skin and aging at the L'Oreal laboratories in Paris, France.
