A section of the DNA molecule at centre has been cut away using an enzyme and is being removed at right. A replacement section is being added at left. DNA contains the inherited instructions necessary for the development of a living organism. It consists of two helical strands joined by bases (blue bars) which form the genetic code. Here, a new section of DNA, perhaps a gene coding for a hormone such as insulin, is being spliced into the DNA. Genes such as this are needed to treat people who lack them through a process known as gene therapy.
