Caption: Gene therapy research. Researchers in protective suits handling DNA vectors inside a level 3 biosafety laboratory. DNA vectors are entities, such as viruses and bacteriophages, that inject DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) into a host cell's nucleus and make multiple copies of their genetic material. They can be genetically engineered to have the pathogenic gene replaced by a therapeutic human gene, in order to counteract a faulty gene in defective cells.
