Caption: DNA manipulation. Light micrograph of a cell showing the technique of genetic manipulation by microinjection. Through this technique DNA (Deoxy- ribonucleic acid) genetic material can be taken out of, or introduced into, the cell. The rounded cell is seen at centre with its dark nucleus. At right is a suction tube used to secure the cell; at left is a fine probe. The probe penetrates the cell to microinject new DNA, or withdraw old DNA. In this way the genetic make-up of a cell can be determined, or its DNA can be manipulated by introducing new genes. Magnification: unknown.
