Caption: Screen-shot from the monitor of an automatic DNA sequencing machine being used to to decode the sequence of base-pairs in DNA fragments extracted from the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. In this method, a different fluorescent dye is attached to each of the four bases, allowing a laser scanner to differentiate between them. The monitor shows the electrophoresis sequence as revealed by the fluoresence emitted from the dyes. The results are colour-coded: cytosine (blue), guanine (yellow), adenine (green) and thymine (red). A project is currently underway to decode the genome of C. elegans, so revealing all of the information encoded in its DNA.
