Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Model released: DNA sequencing. Researcher studies a video image of DNA bands, which has been sequenced by electrophoresis in an agarose gel (background, blue). Once the different bands have been separated, they are stained using ethidium bromide. This fluoresces under ultraviolet light, highlighting the positions of the DNA bands which are viewed using a video camera. The display system includes a video printer which allows hard copies of the sequence to be made almost instantly. The system is being used here to compare DNA from sufferers of retinoblastoma, a rare condition where tumours form on the retina.
