Preparing equipment for DNA sequencing. A gloved laboratory technician lowers a pipette into the gel of an electrophoresis machine. The transparent gel commonly consists of agarose. Under the influence of an electric field, fragments of radioactively-tagged DNA separate according to their size. This DNA sequencing results in a unique banding pattern of DNA fragments across the gel. The banding pattern is then recorded by exposing X-ray film to the radiation emitted by the DNA fragments. The technique of sequencing DNA into a banding pattern allows the structure of genes to be studied.
