Caption: MODEL RELEASED. DNA Research. A researcher examining the genes from a wheat plant which are revealed on an electrophoresis X-ray plate. A transparent gel is loaded with the radioactively tagged DNA & under the influence of an electric field, fragments of the DNA separate according to their size. This DNA sequencing results in a unique banding pattern of DNA fragments across the gel. The banding pattern is then recorded by exposing X-ray film to the radiation emitted by the DNA fragments. The technique of sequencing DNA into a banding pattern allows the structure of genes to be studied. The transparent gel used in electrophoresis commonly consists of agarose.
