Caption: DNA and gene mapping. Purified DNA (deoxyribonu- cleic acid) inside the bottom of a test tube, held in front of an autoradiogram DNA banding pattern produced by gel electrophoresis. The DNA molecule, found in the chromosomes of cell nuclei, carries genetic information (genes) spelt out in a chemi- cal code along its length. The banding pattern seen here is produced by breaking down a sample of DNA into fragments, which are then run along a gel by an electric current. Fragments of the same length collect in discrete bands. The technique is used in DNA fingerprinting and gene mapping, where a gene's position on a chromosome is worked out.
