Caption: DNA study of human kinship. Erika Hagelberg and assistant examine an autoradiogram film with DNA traces of 24 people originating from Melanesia. Lines of black bands on the film form a unique banding pattern for each individual. These bands of the human DNA genetic code can be compared and analysed. Human DNA may be extracted from blood samples, skin or saliva. Here, in a study on human evolution and kinship, the origins and relatedness of 24 Melanesians is being established. Melanesia is a group of Pacific Islands with a widely scattered population of people. Photographed at the University of Cambridge, England.
