Caption: DNA research. A masked research biologist holds a DNA autoradiogram banding pattern produced by gel electrophoresis. The DNA molecule is found in the chromosomes inside cell nuclei. It carries genetic information (or genes) spelt out in a chemical code along its length. The banding pattern seen here is produced by breaking down a sample of DNA into fragments, which are then run along a gel by an electric current. Fragments of the same length collect in discrete bands. The technique is used in DNA fingerprinting and gene mapping.
