Caption: Gene therapy. A researcher prepares culture dishes of gene-corrected T-lymphocytes. T-lymphocytes are white blood cells that play a crucial role in the immune system. This stock of lymphocytes is derived from cells taken from a patient with a suppressed immune system. The original sample was genetically altered to make the cells more active, and then cultured to produce large numbers. The cells can then be reintroduced into the patient to help restore the immune system.
