Gene mapping. A researcher checks a DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) autoradiogram against a scanned image on a computer screen. Autoradiograms show the banding pattern of a DNA probe added to a sample of DNA that has been broken into fragments and spread out along a gel by electrophoresis. The pattern is used to map the position of genetic landmarks in the vicinity of the gene being studied.
