Caption: Cystic fibrosis gene therapy research. Scientist isolating an artificially produced human protein during research into gene therapy for cystic fibrosis. The scientist is using a machine for isolating large protein molecules, seen in a temperature-controlled room. Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disease caused by a mutation in the production of a protein known as CFTR. Scientists have isolated the gene that produces this protein from healthy individuals. This has been inserted into a virus which can make large quantities of the CFTR protein. Both the cloned gene and purified CFTR have potential applications in gene therapy.
