Caption: Obesity DNA research. Technician compares the production of proteins between family members dur- ing genetic research into obesity. The light box (at left) is displaying an autoradiograph giving information on the presence of specific proteins from blood samples of family members. The technic- ian is comparing these with a family tree at lower left. This work is being performed in the laborat- ories of Prof Froguel at the Pasteur Institute, Paris. This team have discovered that obesity is linked to a mutation in the gene that produced the appetite-regulating hormone leptin. Such work will help in developing gene therapies.
